Blues Tutorial #8:

A man with male pattern baldness ain’t the blues. A woman with male pattern baldness is. Breaking your leg cuz you skiing is not the blues. Breaking your leg ‘cuz an alligator be chomping on it is.

Blues Tutorial #7: You can’t have the blues in any place that don’t get rain.

Blues Tutorial #7:

Blues can take place in New York but not in Hawaii or any place in Canada. Havin’ hard times in St. Paul or Tucson is just depression. Chicago, St.Louis & Kansas City still the best places to have the blues. You can’t have the blues in any place that don’t get rain.

Blues Tutorial #6:

Teenagers can’t sing the blues. They ain’t fixin’ to die yet. Adults sing the blues. In blues, “adulthood” means being old enough to get the electric chair if you shoot a man in Memphis.

Anita Loos (b. April 26): “I love high style in low company.”

26 Apr

loosAnita Loos (born 26 April 1889, died 18 August 1981) was an American screenwriter, playwright and author, best known for her blockbuster comic novel, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes.

Nine Quotes:

  1. Fate keeps on happening.
  2. Memory is more indelible than ink.
  3. I’ve always loved high style in low company.
  4. It isn’t that gentlemen really prefer blondes, it’s just that we look dumber.
  5. A kiss on the hand may feel very, very good, but a diamond and sapphire bracelet lasts forever.
  6. On a plane you can pick up more and better people than on any other public conveyance since the stagecoach.
  7. The rarest of all things in American life is charm. We spend billions every year manufacturing fake charm that goes under the heading of public relations. Without it, America would be grim indeed.
  8. There is a serious defect in the thinking of someone who wants – more than anything else – to become rich. As long as they don’t have the money, it’ll seem like a worthwhile goal. Once they do, they’ll understand how important other things are – and have always been.
  9. I can never take for granted the euphoria produced by a cup of coffee. I’m grateful every day that it isn’t banned as a drug, that I don’t have to buy it from a pusher, that its cost is minimal and there’s no need to increase the intake. I can count on its stimulation 365 mornings every year. And thanks to the magic in a cup of coffee, I’m able to plunge into a whole day’s cheerful thinking.

Blues Tutorial #5: Blues cars are Chevys, Cadillacs & broken-down trucks.

Blues Tutorial #5:

Blues cars are Chevys, Cadillacs & broken-down trucks. Blues don’t travel in Volvos, BMWs, or SUVs. Most blues take a Greyhound bus or a southbound train. Jet aircraft & state-sponsored motor pools ain’t even in the running. Walkin’ plays a major part in the blues lifestyle. So does fixin’ to die.

Vineyards (a poem)

25 Apr

VINEYARDS

naparoad-1a

There was a summer years gone by,
we wandered vineyards, love and I.
Beneath the sun we quenched our thirst,
and crushed the grapes until they burst,
when each with purple head engorged
gave way to teeth with which we gorged.

naparoad-4a

But in the fall of all things human,
we rode our way to wrack and ruin.
Still feeding on our own desires,
we had no thought to bank our fires.
And but for winter, who would know
there’d come a day with no Pinot?

naparoad-3a

Yet in my glass I sense her still –
full-bodied taste, bouquet nose-filled.
Except for memory, there’s no trace
of tears I kissed from her sweet face,
but know now in the dregs of time
they weren’t her tears, but only mine.
